What is a Vascular Surgeon?

A vascular surgeon is a medical doctor who specialises in diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions related to the blood vessels (arteries and veins) and the lymphatic system.

Vascular surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical techniques to treat these conditions. They also manage and prevent complications related to vascular diseases, aiming to improve overall blood flow and vascular health

What Treatments Do We Specialise In?

A vascular surgeon specialises in a range of treatments for conditions affecting the vascular system. Their treatments can be broadly categorised into surgical and non-surgical options

Open Surgical/Minimally Invasive (Endovascular) Treatments

Angioplasty and Stenting
Angioplasty: A balloon is used to widen narrowed or blocked arteries.
Stenting: A small mesh tube (stent) is placed to keep the artery open after angioplasty.

Bypass Surgery
Creating a new pathway for blood flow around a blocked or narrowed artery using a graft (often a piece of vein or synthetic material).

Endarterectomy
Removing plaque from the inner lining of an artery to restore normal blood flow or prevent dislodgement, commonly performed on the carotid arteries in the neck.

Aneurysm Repair

  • Open Surgery: Removing the damaged section of the artery and replacing it with a graft.
  • Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR): Inserting a stent graft through the arteries in the groins to reinforce the weakened artery from inside.

Varicose Vein Surgery (Performed in the rooms or occassionally in theatre in specialised cases):

  • Sclerotherapy: Injecting a solution into the vein to cause it to collapse and fade.
  • Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation Therapy: Using radiofrequency energy to close off varicose veins.
  • Phlebectomy: Removing varicose veins through very small incisions.

Thrombectomy
Removing a blood clot from a vein or artery, often performed in cases of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or acute arterial occlusion.

Non-Surgical Treatments

Medication Management

Prescribing medications to manage conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood clots.

Lifestyle Modifications

Recommending changes in diet, exercise, and other habits to improve vascular health and prevent disease progression.

Compression Therapy

Using compression stockings or other devices to manage chronic venous insufficiency and reduce symptoms like swelling and pain.

Ultrasound and Other Diagnostic Techniques

Using imaging techniques to diagnose vascular conditions and guide non-surgical interventions.

Vascular surgeons work closely with patients to determine the most appropriate treatment plan based on their specific condition, overall health, and lifestyle.
